Lung Cancer screening
If you are registered with us, aged 50 to 74 and are a current smoker or an ex-smoker, you may be offered lung cancer screening.
The Government has announced the NHS will roll out targeted lung cancer screening across England. Currently, lung health checks are only available in some parts of England and Oxfordshire is one of them.
What is a lung cancer screening or a lung health check?
Oxford University Hospitals will invite patients to have a 10 minute phone call about their smoking history.
A health professional will ask about your health and lifestyle to find out more about your risk of lung cancer.
After this, they will assess your risk factors for lung conditions and if appropriate offer you a more detailed consultation face to face with a nurse on a mobile consultation unit based in Cowley, Oxford.
You may also be offered a scan of your lungs.
If you are a current smoker, you will be offered advice on how to stop smoking.
If you have not been invited for a lung health check
If you’re not sure your GP knows that you currently smoke, or have smoked in the past, please complete our online smoking review so we can update your record. This will make sure you are invited for a lung health check in the future.
Screening is for people without symptoms. Do not wait for a lung health check if you have any of these symptoms. If you have any of these symptoms, please book an appointment with a doctor without delay.
Symptoms of lung cancer include:
- a cough that does not go away after 3 weeks
- an existing cough that changes or gets worse
- chest infections that keep coming back
- coughing up blood
- being short of breath a lot
- unexplained tiredness
- an ache or pain when breathing or coughing
- loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss
